    A Historic Secret Garden

In 1945, Sarah Boylston deeded part of her personal garden to the Garden Club of South Carolina, creating the first Memorial Garden in the United States to honor World War II veterans. Renowned Landscape Architect Loutrel Briggs of Charleston, SC, designed the garden. With contributions from GCSC members, the Veterans Committee and generous Columbia businesses, the garden was built and continued to evolve. Benches and garden statuary were donated by individual garden clubs and districts. The fountain was completed in 1950, and the gatehouse, now used as a waiting space and restroom, was finished in 1957.
